Fast 14 Millionen Touristen wurden im Jahr 2019 auf der spanischen Mittelmeerinsel Mallorca gezählt. Aufgrund der jüngsten Reisebeschränkungen wurde der Besucheransturm zwischenzeitlich stark gebremst, doch jetzt kehren die Urlauber zurück. An Gründen dafür mangelt es nicht. Die einen sehnen sich nach Erholung am Strand oder in luxuriösen Hotelanlagen, für manche steht Party-Stimmung an der Playa de Palma im Mittelpunkt des Interesses, und wieder andere schwören auf „das andere Mallorca“. Einsame Buchten, naturbelassende Landschaften und kleine, ursprüngliche Ortschaften abseits der Touristenhochburgen finden sich in nahezu allen Regionen Mallorcas, wie eine Insel-Rundtour im MINI John Cooper Works Clubman zeigt. Der bietet mit seinem von 360 auf bis zu 1 250 Liter erweiterbaren Stauraum genügend Platz für das Urlaubsgepäck und ist mit dem serienmäßigen Allradantrieb ALL4 auch dort souverän unterwegs, wo ein besonders schöner Strandabschnitt nur über unbefestigte Straßen oder Schotterpisten zu erreichen ist.

Die Serienausstattung des MINI John Cooper Works Clubman umfasst nicht nur ein betont sportliches Flair im Innenraum, sondern auch ein Multifunktionales Instrumentendisplay auf der Lenksäule sowie ein neues Bediensystem, mit dem sich Fahrzeugfunktionen, Audioprogramm, Kommunikation, Navigation und Apps besonders schnell und intuitiv steuern lassen. Die jeweiligen Menüpunkte werden jetzt als Live-Widgets auf dem 8,8 Zoll großen Touch-Display im Zentralinstrument dargestellt und können ähnlich wie auf dem Smartphone mit einer Wischbewegung ausgewählt werden. So wird die Zieleingabe bei der Suche nach sehenswerten Inselorten noch einfacher, und auch das passende Musikprogramm für die Fahrt dorthin ist im Handumdrehen verfügbar. Für die Grafikdarstellung auf beiden Displays stehen außerdem zwei Farbwelten zur Auswahl: entspannende Blau- und Türkis-Töne im Modus „Lounge“ oder eine Kombination aus Rot und Anthrazit im Modus „Sport“.
Die Entdeckungstour im MINI John Cooper Works Clubman beginnt in Palma de Mallorca. Wie viele spanische Küstenorte verfügt die Inselhauptstadt über eine Rambla. Auf der von Platanen gesäumten Promenade im Zentrum der Stadt bieten zahlreiche Blumenhändler ihre Waren an. Sie wurde einst in einem ausgetrockneten Flussbett angelegt, der Begriff Rambla lässt sich daher auch als „Straße, die zum Meer führt“, übersetzen. Auch der weiter südlich und unweit der Kathedrale gelegene Passeig des Born besitzt mit seinen Schatten spendenden Bäumen den Charakter einer Rambla. Von dort sind es dann tatsächlich nur noch wenige Hundert Meter bis zum Jachthafen von Palma.
Dort hat der Real Club Náutico de Palma seinen Sitz, der alljährlich einen der wichtigsten Segelsportwettbewerbe Spaniens ausrichtet. An der Regatta um die Copa del Rey, die in der Bucht von Palma ausgetragen wird, nahmen bereits mehrfach auch Mitglieder der spanischen Königsfamilie teil. Doch nicht nur für den Segelsport, sondern auch für zahlreiche weitere Disziplinen bietet Mallorca ideale Bedingungen. Die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten für eine aktive Freizeitgestaltung machen für viele Besucher den besonderen Reiz der Insel aus. So bildet das abwechslungsreiche Streckenprofil mit kurvigen Küstenstraßen und teilweise recht steilen Bergetappen ein Trainingsquartier, das bei Amateur- und Profiradsportlern gleichermaßen beliebt ist. Extremschwimmer durchqueren die 40 Kilometer breite Meerenge zwischen der Ostküste Mallorcas und der Nachbarinsel Menorca in weniger als zehn Stunden. Und seit einigen Jahren üben sich abenteuerlustige im #Coasteering, dem Klettern an steilen Küstenfelsen.
Mallorca-Reisende, die sich für Motorsport begeistern, werden auf der Insel ebenfalls fündig. Direkt an der Autobahn, etwa auf halbem Weg zwischen dem Flughafen von Palma und Llucmajor liegt seit fast 25 Jahren der Circuit Mallorca, eine Auto- und Motorradrennstrecke mit angeschlossener Kartbahn. Mallorcas Motorsportverbände nutzen die Strecke für Wettbewerbe auf zwei und vier Rädern. Dafür stehen ein Kontrollturm, eine Boxengasse, eine Startampel, eine elektronische Zeitmessanlage sowie Tribünen für bis zu 1 500 Zuschauer zur Verfügung. Darüber hinaus können sowohl einheimische als auch auswärtige Rennsport-Enthusiasten auf dem Circuit Mallorca allein oder unter professioneller Anleitung ihre Fahrkünste optimieren. Auf der rund 3 200 Meter langen Asphaltbahn der Hauptstrecke sind fünf Links- und acht Rechtskurven zu bewältigen.
Für uns ist der Ausflug auf die Rennstrecke eine mehr als willkommene Gelegenheit, die Qualitäten seiner mit Rennsport-Knowhow entwickelten Antriebs- und Fahrwerkstechnologie auf den Zahn zu fühlen. Sein 2,0 Liter großer Vierzylinder-Motor mit MINI TwinPower Turbo Technologie entwickelt eine Höchstleistung von 225 kW/306 PS und ein maximales Drehmoment von 450 Nm. Das ermöglicht eine Beschleunigung von null auf 100 km/h in 4,9 Sekunden aus dem Stand mit Hilfe der Launch-Control-Funktion des serienmäßigen 8-Gang Steptronic Sport Getriebes. Dabei trägt auch das MINI spezifische Allradsystem ALL4 zur traktionsoptimierten Kraftübertragung bei.
In den engen und schnell aufeinanderfolgenden Kurven des Circuit Mallorca stellt sich dann heraus, der JCW Clubman ist keiner, der auf Landstraßen tollt und durch Kurven flockig leicht surft. Er arbeitet sich vielmehr an ihnen ab.
Den ersten Haken schlägt der Mini noch flockig. Doch beim Umlegen von links auf rechts bedrückt ihn das Gewicht. Da reißt ihn die mechanische Differenzialsperre an der Vorderachse auch nicht entscheidend herum. Die 1,6 Tonnen lasten dafür zu schwer auf dem Clubman. Das ist – so ganz nebenbei – überhaupt nicht Mini-like.
Statt im Sauseschritt durchzueilen, muss man Geschwindigkeit herausnehmen, um nicht abzudriften. Erst wenn er den Kurvenausgang sieht, spielt der Mini seine Stärken aus. Mit dem Allradantrieb wuchtet er sich aus der Ecke und sprintet die Gerade entlang.
Der Motor bringt den Spaß.Der Vierzylinder-Turbo ist der Dreh- und Angelpunkt für seine Performance. Eine Leistung von 306 PS und ein Drehmoment von bis zu 450 Newtonmetern sprudeln aus dem Aggregat heraus. Nach 5,1 Sekunden macht der Mini das Häkchen an den Image-Spurt und zieht in 19,8 Sekunden bis auf 200 Sachen durch. Alle Achtung: Dieser Mini läuft!
Präzision beim Anbremsen vor der Kurve gewährleistet die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Spezialhersteller Brembo entwickelte Sportbremsanlage. Mit ihren Vier-Kolben-Festsattel-Scheibenbremsen an der Vorderachse bietet sie auch nach diversen Highspeed-Runden auf dem Circuit Mallorca konstante Verzögerungsleistungen und ein optimales Pedalgefühl.
Dass auch der Antrieb von der Hitze des Rennstreckeneinsatzes und der spanischen Sonne weitgehend unbeeindruckt bleibt, ist dem modellspezifischen Kühlsystem des MINI John Cooper Works Clubman zu verdanken. Zwei ausgelagerte Kühlmittelkühler, ein Ausgleichsbehälter mit besonders großem Volumen, eine eigenständige Kühlmodullagerung, ein elektrischer Lüfter mit erhöhter Leistung und eine mittels Kondensator realisierte dritte Kühlebene gewährleisten eine auch unter extremer Belastung jederzeit optimale Betriebstemperatur des Motors. Darüber hinaus verfügt das Getriebe über einen separaten Kühlkreislauf mit einem ausgelagerten Ölkühler.
So bleibt der MINI John Cooper Works Clubman auch nach etlichen Runden auf Mallorcas heißester Piste weitgehendst cool. Und auch dem Fahrer kann geholfen werden. Vom Circuit Mallorca sind es nur knapp fünf Kilometer bis zum Strand von El Arenal, wo die Fluten des Mittelmeers für Abkühlung sorgen.

Tourism is picking up again on the largest island of the Balearic Islands. The possibilities for active leisure activities are as varied as the landscape and beach life. They make the Spanish holiday paradise a popular destination not only for cyclists, tennis players and sailors, but also for motor sports enthusiasts.
Almost 14 million tourists were counted on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca in 2019. Due to the recent travel restrictions, the rush of visitors was slowed down considerably in the meantime, but now the holidaymakers are returning. There is no shortage of reasons for this. Some long for relaxation on the beach or in luxurious hotel complexes, for some the party atmosphere at Playa de Palma is the focus of interest, and still others swear by „the other Mallorca“. Lonely bays, unspoilt landscapes and small, unspoilt villages away from the tourist strongholds can be found in almost all regions of Mallorca, as a round trip of the island in the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman shows. With its storage space that can be expanded from 360 to up to 1 250 litres, sporty premium compact model offers enough room for holiday luggage and, with ALL4 all-wheel drive as standard, is also confidently on the move where a particularly beautiful stretch of beach can only be reached via unpaved roads or gravel tracks.
The standard equipment of the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman not only includes an emphatically sporty flair in the interior, but also a multifunctional instrument display on the steering column as well as a new operating system with which vehicle functions, audio programme, communication, navigation and apps can be controlled particularly quickly and intuitively. The respective menu items are now displayed in modern form as live widgets on the 8.8-inch touch display in the central instrument and can be selected with a swiping motion similar to that on a smartphone. This makes it even easier to enter destinations when searching for island locations worth seeing, and the right music programme for the journey there is also available in no time at all. There is also a choice of two colour worlds for the graphics on both displays: relaxing blue and turquoise tones in „Lounge“ mode or a combination of red and anthracite in „Sport“ mode.
The discovery tour in the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman begins in Palma de Mallorca. Like many Spanish coastal towns, the island capital has a Rambla. On the plane-lined promenade in the centre of the city, numerous florists offer their wares. It was once built in a dry riverbed, so the term rambla can also be translated as „street leading to the sea“. The Passeig des Born, further south and not far from the cathedral, also has the character of a Rambla with its shady trees. From there it is only a few hundred metres to the marina of Palma.
The Real Club Náutico de Palma has its headquarters there and organises one of the most important sailing competitions in Spain every year. Members of the Spanish royal family have taken part several times in the Copa del Rey regatta, which is held in the bay of Palma. However, Mallorca offers ideal conditions not only for sailing, but also for numerous other disciplines. The many opportunities for active leisure activities are what make the island so appealing to many visitors. For example, the varied route profile with winding coastal roads and sometimes quite steep mountain stages forms a training ground that is popular with amateur and professional cyclists alike. Extreme swimmers cross the 40-kilometre-wide strait between the east coast of Mallorca and the neighbouring island of Menorca in less than ten hours. And for some years now, adventurous people have been practising coasteering, climbing on steep coastal cliffs.
Travellers to Mallorca who are enthusiastic about motor sports will also find what they are looking for on the island. Directly on the motorway, about halfway between Palma airport and Llucmajor, you will find the Circuit Mallorca, a car and motorbike race track with an attached kart track, which has been in operation for almost 25 years. Mallorca’s motor sport associations use the track for competitions on two and four wheels. For this purpose, there is a control tower, a pit lane, a starting light, an electronic timing system and grandstands for up to 1,500 spectators. In addition, both local and foreign racing enthusiasts can optimise their driving skills on the Circuit Mallorca alone or under professional guidance. There are five left-hand and eight right-hand bends to negotiate on the asphalt track of the main circuit, which is around 3,200 metres long.
For us the excursion onto the racetrack is a more than welcome opportunity to test the qualities of its drive and chassis technology developed with sound racing know-how. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology develops a maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The furious temperament enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The launch control function of the standard 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission ensures perfect acceleration from a standstill. The MINI-specific ALL4 all-wheel drive system also contributes to traction-optimised power transmission.
In the tight and quickly successive corners of the Circuit Mallorca it turns out that the JCW Clubman is not someone who romps on country roads and surfs through bends with flaky ease. Rather, it has to work it off.
The Mini hits the first corner flaky. But when turning from left to right, the weight comes into play. The mechanical differential lock on the front axle doesn’t really pull the Clubman around. It shows that the 1.6 tons of the Clubman have to be poised delicately oved around the track. This is – by the way – not mini-like at all.
Instead of rushing through the bends and tight corners, you have to slow down so as not to get caught by the understeer trap. Only when it sees the exit of the curve does the Mini show its strengths. With the all-wheel drive, he heaves himself out of the corner and sprints along the straight.
The sports braking system developed in collaboration with the specialist manufacturer Brembo ensures maximum precision when braking in front of the bend. With its four-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes on the front axle, it offers constant deceleration performance and optimum pedal feel even after various high-speed laps on the Circuit Mallorca.
The fact that the powertrain also remains largely unimpressed by the heat of the race track and the Spanish sun is thanks to the model-specific cooling system of the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. Two outsourced coolant radiators, an expansion tank with a particularly large volume, an independent cooling module storage, an electric fan with increased power and a third cooling level realised by means of a condenser ensure an optimal operating temperature of the engine at all times, even under extreme load. In addition, the transmission has a separate cooling circuit with a separate oil cooler.
So the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman remains a fascinatingly „cool“ lad even after several laps on Mallorca’s hottest track. And the driver can also be helped. From the Circuit Mallorca it is only five kilometres to the beach of El Arenal, where the tides of the Mediterranean Sea provide cooling.
